My love letter to men…

Dear Men,

I know I’m hard on you, a lot. But it’s because I love men.

(oh just stop with the eye rolling and snorts. I really do…)

You know what’s really crazy? I know a ton of women who love men.  Even my Twifey Darling Nicky999 paid tribute to you a few months back. Despite their flaws and shortcomings; in fact, they love them because of it.  So, on behalf of those women, in 1000 words, a Valentine’s love letter…

We love men who can’t dance, but try. We love men who take risks. We love men who own the room when they walk into it (especially alpha females). We love the shy boys who hang back and observe. We love men who smile (especially when that smile is only for us). We love men who open doors. We love men who let us take the lead (whether it be in the boardroom or the bedroom). We love men who are passionate – about work, life, music, and yes, even video games (passionate, not absorbed).

We love men who cook. We love men who can order a pizza like nobody’s business. We love men who love shoes. We love men that have their main barber and a backup for emergencies. We love men who read, even if it’s only one magazine. We love men that are grammar police. We love men that love porn. We love men who are buff. We love skinny men. We love men with bellies.

We love men who live clean lives. We love men who drink and get high. We love men who put up our shelves and assemble our IKEA furniture. We love men who can make us laugh. We love men who make us cry. We love men that laugh at themselves. We love men who are ticklish. We love men who hold our hands. We love men who can talk for hours about important shit. We love men who can talk about nonsensical shit for hours. We love men who will watch So You Think You Can Dance Canada. We love men who watch all day marathons of Seinfeld. We love men that love rap, rock, hip-hop, ambient, pop music, reggae, soca, classical, jazz, country and/or zouk. We love the men that sing along to every song. We love the men who only bob their heads to the beat.

We love the men who are firm and loving fathers, doting uncles and protective big brothers. We love men who are faithful sons, caring cousins and wise grandfathers. We love the little men that call us “mommy”. We love men who smell like musk and sweat after a hard day of work. We love men who smell like fine cologne. We love men who call us honey, baby, boo, mami, bella, and yes, even wifey. We love the men who have pictures of us in their wallets or on the home screen of their phones. We love men who respect us. We love men with an Entourage. We love men like Turtle. We love men like E. We love men like Vince. We love men like Ari. (“Drama”? Not so much). We love men who say they just want to spend the night with us and leave the entourage at home.

We love men who value our contributions to their lives. We love men who admire our skills as mothers. We love men who play pool, poker and dominoes. We love men who keep it real when it’s something worth keeping it real for. We love men who will steal bread to feed their families if they have to. We love men who will have their friend’s back in a fight, right or wrong. We love men who will defend our honour. We love men who let us handle the fight on our own.

We love men who will sweep us off our feet. We love men who will sweep the floor. We love men who can provide us with wisdom. We love men who seek our wisdom. We love men in suits. We love men who have never tied a tie. We love men who are ballers. We love men who only wear blue collars. We love men who kill bugs. We love men who freak at the sight of spiders. We love men with curls, dreads, spikes, twists, waves, pompadours and shaved heads. We love men who see with perfect vision. We love men who have to wear coke bottle glasses.

We love men who can speak to a room. We love men who speak to us as if we’re the only ones in the room. We love men that move nations. We love men that stir hearts. We love men with the keys to their Lexus. We love the men who take the subway every day. We love men who use a bicycle to get around.  We love men who can fix cars. We love men who have CAA and their mechanic on speed dial.

We love men who can dunk. We love men who ace the shot. We love men who can drop pass. We love men who can rappel face first. We love men who never have to mulligan. We love men who know the offisides rule. We love men who can spike. We love men who catch that fly ball. We love men who can buttonhook. We love men who have a strong baseline game.

We love men that keep kosher. We love men who Salah. We love men who go to church every Sunday. We love the men who go for Midnight Mass once a year. We love men who know all the words to japji sahib. We love men who follow the way of the Tao. We love men who believe in Buddha. We love men who believe in Jah. We love men who follow Shiva. We love men who don’t believe in it any of it.

We love the men who are loyal. We love men who are loyal to us. We love the men who inspire us to be better women. We love the men that find us their inspiration. We love the men that are our friends. We love the men that are our boyfriends. We love the men that are our husbands. We love (even if we hate) the fathers of our child(ren).

We love you when we wake up and we love when you’re that last call of the night.

We love you.
